NUOVO MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO
Archaeological museum exposing the discoveries made on the territory
Occupying a former Franciscan convent from the 15th century, this archaeological museum (but modern!) exhibits the discoveries that have been unearthed on the territory. The Messapian city, which bore the name of Ozan, was an important urban centre protected by a powerful wall. Of note is the rich funerary repertoire found in a tomb dating from the 6th century BC and a copy of the bronze statue of Zeus of Ugento, kept in the Archaeological Museum of Taranto, which proves the intensity of cultural exchanges between the local population and the Greek colony of Taranto.
