Underground oil mill dug by man in the basement of Palazzo Granafei.

Under the cobblestones, not the beach! But access to an inherent cultural heritage of Puglia: the underground oil mill (frantoio oleario ipogeo). This buried treasure, dug by man 's hand in the basement of Palazzo Granafei, bears witness to an important chapter of local history. Of the 35 hypogean olive presses that the town had in the 16th and 17th centuries - when Gallipoli was the world capital of lampante olive oil - only two have survived, including this one, which has been turned into a museum. The guided tour is unusual and truly fascinating.

Absolutely incredible to go down to the meeting from the rich past from Gallipoli. This oil mill is extremely well preserved, the lights are soft, updated mechanism. It is a very beautiful experience!
