NECROPOLI DAUNIA DI MONTE SARACENO
Archaeological museum with a protohistoric necropolis of 500 tombs
A real open-air museum that stretches over about two kilometres, in an enchanting setting, this archaeological site is suspended between sky and sea. On the crest of Mount Saraceno, a protohistoric necropolis of 500 tombs testifies to the presence of the Daunians in the Gargano. The tombs, dug into the limestone rock, have the shape of a uterus, a funerary ritual that evokes a return to prenatal life. The recovered objects are kept in the museum of Mattinata.
