CASTELLO
Imposing castle recognizable from afar with its tower of the Giants, favorite residence of Frederick II.
This imposing castle is recognizable from afar by its "torre dei Giganti" (tower of the giants), a Swabian heritage. Built in 838 and enlarged by the Normans, the castle was one of the favourite residences of Frederick II, who settled there with his beloved Bianca Lancia and his children, Costanza, Violante and Manfredi. In the time of the Angevins, the castle became a military fortress and a state prison. It is said that the queen of Naples, Joanna I of Anjou, was imprisoned there and died in 1382. Since 1907 the building has been the property of the town hall of Monte Sant'Angelo.
