On the night of Good Friday, the procession is accompanied by torches made of tree branches, which turn into a torrent of fire.
In San Marco in Lamis, in the hinterland of the Gargano, the procession of the Madonna dell'Addolorata is preceded by the parade of the fracchie, huge torches made of tree branches, which are set on fire on Good Friday night and which turn into a torrent of fire. The origins of this procession date back to the 18th century. According to tradition, the fracchie were to light the way for the Virgin from her sanctuary to the streets of the city.
