CATTEDRALE SAN GERARDO
Cathedral, with frescoes by Mario Prayer, on one of the highest points of Potenza.
The Cathedral of Potenza, founded around the year 1200, was rebuilt between 1783 and 1799 by Antonio Magri, a pupil of Vanvitelli (the architect responsible for the construction of the Caserta Palace near Naples). It is located on one of the highest points of the city, at 823 meters above sea level, and is dedicated to Saint Gerard, patron saint of the city, bishop of Potenza in the 12th century. His relics are kept in a Roman sarcophagus in a chapel on the right transept. The frescoes, created by Mario Prayer, date back to the 1930s.
