DUOMO
Cathedral with a fifteenth-century crucifix and a twelfth-century painting in Melfi.
The cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. It is said to have been founded by the Norman Robert Guiscard, in 1075, or by William I, known as the Evil One, in 1153. Rebuilt in the 18th century, after the earthquake of 1694, it has kept only its original Norman bell tower, 50 meters high, built in 1153. The interior has a Latin cross plan with three naves. There is a 15th century wooden crucifix and a 12th century painting of the Virgin and Child between two angels (La Madonna col Bambino fra due angeli).
