A charming rock church, remarkable Byzantine frescoes, in Melfi.
This small rock church has not only charm but also a major artistic interest for its walls covered with frescoes in Byzantine style. One of them deserves special attention: entitled "Contrasto dei vivi et dei morti" (Contrast between the living and the dead), some scholars have believed to recognize represented Emperor Frederick II, his wife and their legitimate son, Conrad IV. This is believed to be the only portrait of the Swabian emperor that exists.
