Visit the Museo Archeologico Della Val d'Agri which is located in the vicinity of the archaeological park
Located on the outskirts of the archaeological park, the museum building has the shape of a truncated pyramid. It consists of three sections: Prehistory, the pre-Roman period and the Roman period. The first two sections offer an overview of the Agri valley and its populations before the Roman conquest in the 3rd century BC. They show funerary material and ceramic fragments typical of the Apennine area. One of the most curious elements are the bones of elephants, some of which date back to the pachyderms of Hannibal's army, but which are thought to have come from the ancient Elephans of the Quaternary era, who frequented these lands 120,000 years ago. The passage to the Iron Age and Greek influence is illustrated by remains and objects discovered near the villages of Montemurro and Marsico Nuovo. At this time, the indigenous populations came into contact with the Greek colonies on the coast and suffered the arrival of the Lucanians in the 5th and 4th centuries. The floor is dedicated to the Roman period, where the life of the city is reconstructed up to medieval times. The Roman settlement of Grumentum had a regular orthogonal plan around the forum. The town was a mint and inscriptions bear witness to the local political and religious life. Among the most significant pieces in the museum is a marble fragment from the forum representing the head of Livia, Augustus' wife.
