CHIESA DEL PURGATORIO
A beautiful church, with a convex façade, with impressive baroque altars in Matera.
A visit to this beautiful church with its convex façade, reminiscent of an archbishop's mitre, is not to be missed. Note the macabre ornamentation, the bas-reliefs and the wooden doors with skulls and skeletons. It was built by the Confraternità delle Sante Anime del Purgatorio in 1723, when Matera had about 20 confraternities out of a population of 15,000. The interior has a Greek cross plan and preserves baroque altars in polychrome marble. A shining example of late Baroque.
