Underground tank, the largest water reservoir in Matera.
This cistern is the largest water tank in Matera with a capacity of 5,000m3. It was dug under Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the main square of the city. In addition to rainwater, a natural spring located on the hill of the castle of Tramontano supplies this public reservoir. In Matera, it is not the only one! A much more complex system of water collection extends under all the sassi, like the roots of a tree. This particularity has contributed to make the sassi a Unesco listed site.
