NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEDIEVAL AND MODERN ART
Museum of medieval and contemporary art in Palazzo Lanfranchi in Matera.
The National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art is located in Palazzo Lanfranchi, a former seminary commissioned by Bishop Lanfranchi and built between 1668 and 1672. Thefirst floor of the museum is divided into three sections: sacred art, the D'Errico collection and contemporary art.
The sacred art section includes works from churches in the Lucanian territory, among which are paintings detached from rocky sites.
The D'Errico collection includes about one hundred paintings of the Neapolitan school of the 17th and 18th centuries, gathered by Camillo D'Errico at the end of the 19th century. It includes artists such as Francesco de Mura, Salvator Rosa, Mattia Preti, Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo...
The contemporary art section gathers portraits and landscapes painted by Carlo Levi (1902-1975) during his confinement in Basilicata. The famous writer was, in fact, also a painter, but also a journalist and doctor. There are also paintings by Luigi Guerricchio (Matera, 1936-1996) and photographs by Mario Cresci.
On the first floor, Lucania '61 is a monumental canvas painted by Carlo Levi on the occasion of the centenary of Italian unity. This work is representative of the particular atmosphere of the sassi and of the misery that reigned in this rocky habitat before the 1952 decree.
The2nd floor hosts temporary exhibitions.
Don't miss the view of the Sasso Caveoso alleys from the Piazzetta Pascoli, which is simply splendid.
