CHIESA SAN GIULIANO
Byzanto-Norman church representing the most important religious monument of Castrovillari
The church of San Giuliano, dedicated to the town's patron saint (celebrated every 27th January), is Castrovillari's most important religious monument. Of Byzantine-Norman origin (11th century), it was enlarged in the 16th century to incorporate the ancient synagogue of the Jewish quarter! Restored again in the 17th century, the church has a rich Baroque interior and preserves valuable works such as the 16th century Christ, a precious baptismal font and a 16th century oil on canvas depicting a black Madonna.
