MUSEO DIOCESANO D'ARTE SACRA
This museum houses the Codex Purpureus, one of the oldest collections of Byzantine Greek gospels.
The museum houses a unique piece of art in the world: the Codex Purpureus, one of the oldest collections of Greek Byzantine gospels. It dates from the 6th century and comes from a scriptorium in Caesarea, Palestine. The work was transferred to Calabria around the 7th century. It is no longer complete as only the first half of the letter of Eusebius and the incomplete gospels of St Mark and St Matthew remain. In all, there are 366 pages of parchment in lambskin, in Greek script, gold and silver. One page of this collection is turned every two years.
