BATTISTERO
Byzantine baptistery with a small Swabian arch portal
The exact date of the construction of this Byzantine baptistery, leaning against the Cathedral of Santa Severina, with a circular plan with four arms, unique in Italy, is not known. The small pointed portal is from the Swabian period. The baptistery is covered by a small dome, supported inside by eight columns recovered from ancient buildings. The capitals are decorated with geometric motifs and inscriptions in Greek. The walls were covered with frescoes, some traces of which remain, including a 15th-century Saint Jerome.
