CATTEDRAL
Cathedral at the top of the hill in the village of Santa Severine with numerous frescoes
At the top of the hill in the village of Santa Severina, the main square is bordered at one end by the castle and at the other by the cathedral. Built in the 13th century by Archbishop Ruggero, the cathedral has many frescoes, including one of San Francesco di Paola with the Madonna, depicting Pope Zechariah, born in 679 A.D. in Santa Severina. In fact, under the Byzantines, the small town of Santa Severina became an important religious centre and was the seat of a metropolitan episcopate, directly dependent on Byzantium.
