CASTELLO CARAFA
Imposing fortified construction with remains of Byzantine necropolis
Also called "Castello Roberto il Guiscardo", named after the Norman king (Robert Guiscard) who ordered its construction in the 11th century, on ancient Byzantine fortifications. Reshaped in the 15th century, this imposing fortified building with powerful ramparts is one of the best preserved in southern Italy. It has retained a square keep and the four circular corner towers. Its central part dates back to Norman times. Remains of Byzantine necropolises, weapons and armour, defence system intact... The castle is worth the detour.
