The Provincial Archaeological Museum of Catanzaro, inaugurated on 4 May 1879, is the oldest museum in Calabria. It houses numerous archaeological finds covering a vast period from Prehistory to the Middle Ages and, in particular, an important numismatic collection of about 8,000 Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Norman and Swabian coins. There is also a small art gallery and an exhibition of documents from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
