ROVINE DI HIPPONION
The ruins of Hipponion are visible in the upper part of the city
The ruins of Hipponion, a Greek colony founded at the end of the 7th century BC by Locres, can be seen in the upper part of the town, where the present lookout point is located, in the Parco delle Rimembranze. In 1916 the archaeologist Paolo Orsi discovered the remains of a Doric temple dating back to the 6th century BC and the ancient walls made of large sandstone blocks (6th-3rd centuries BC). Of the temple, only the foundations remain, the latter having been used as a stone quarry. Portions of the ramparts can be seen along the road leading to the cemetery.
