CHIESA DI PIEDIGROTTA
Unique and unusual little church by the sea with a special atmosphere
A surprising little church on the seafront, entirely carved out of the rock by the survivors of a shipwreck at the end of the 17th century. The church became a popular place of worship and, at the end of the 19th century, Angelo Barone, a local artist, enlarged the place and decorated it with a hundred sculptures, directly carved in the tufa, representing holy figures and sacred episodes. The result is a unique and unusual church in which the natural light penetrating through the cracks of the cave reinforces the particular atmosphere.
