CASTELLO RUFFO
Impressive castle offering a superb panorama between sea and mountain
The impressive castle of Scilla sits steeply on the cliff and dominates the harbour. It was owned by the powerful Ruffo family in the 16th century. However, the defensive function of the site proves to be older: during the Magna Grecia period, a fortified building defended Rhegion against pirate incursions from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The site was also a Byzantine, Norman and Angevin stronghold. The sloping path leading to the castle offers a superb panorama between sea and mountain, and leads to a pretty fortified courtyard with stone arches.
