Smaller in size (18 000 seats) than the Hrazdan Stadium, the former "Republican Stadium", renamed Vazken Sarksian after the Prime Minister who died in the October 1999 parliamentary massacre, is a former Soviet-era structure that has been completely restored and brought up to safety standards. Until the Hrazdan Stadium is fully restored, it is the stadium south of Republic Square that hosts football matches and other major sporting events, such as the Pan-Armenian Games.
