SOURP HOVANNES CHURCH
This church in Everan epitomizes the transition from early Christian buildings to domed Armenian churches.
The Church of St. John (Sourp Hovannes) is, after Erebouni, the oldest building in Yerevan. The village of Avan, northwest of the capital, was the seat of a probyzantine Chalcedonian Catholicossate when this cathedral was built between 590 and 609. It illustrates the transition from early Christian buildings, marked by Roman influence in the Hellenistic-style pediment, to Armenian domed churches. Next to the church are two chapels from the same period, and there is a cemetery with khatchkar from the 13th and 18th centuries.
