SOURP MARINE CHURCH

Small church with rounded dome in the town of Achtarak, dating from 1281, part of a vast monastic complex.
In the centre of Achtarak, the elegant Church of St. Mary (Sourp Marina) stands out from the small Karmravor Church with its rounded dome and drum topped with a particularly slender and pointed roof. The drum, itself rather narrow, is crisscrossed with finely carved geometric arches and interlacing. Dated 1281, this church would have been part of a larger monastic complex, of which only the surrounding walls remain. In the twentieth century, a large oblong church was added to it, which remained unfinished for a long time.
