FORT SEV GHUL
Built in 1834, this circular fort in the north of the city was one of the main Russian outposts against the Ottoman Empire
Situated on the heights of the city to the west, this circular fort is one of the main sights of Gyumri. Built in 1834, Sev Ghul (Black Fortress) was one of the main Russian outposts against the Ottoman Empire, and defended the garrison of Alexandropol from incursions from Kars (on the other side of the Ahurian River, to the west, marking the Armenian-Turkish border today), which was Russian territory from 1875 to 1918. It had room for 15,000 men. The site now depends on the Russian base in Gyumri.
