KHORANASHAT MONASTERY

A monastery remarkable for its sculpted decor, located in Khoranashat, housing a church overgrown with greenery as well as a jamatoun.
Invaded by greenery, the main church Sourp Asdvadzadzin was built around 1122 by the learned priest and historian Yovhannés Vanakan, a disciple of Mkhitar Goch. It is to the latter that we owe the jamatoun that precedes the church. The intellectual activity of the monastery declined after the death of its founder in 1251, who rests in a chapel whose ruins are visible to the east of the complex. In need of restoration, the monastic complex has preserved an interesting sculpted decoration, rich in animal figures such as lions, buffaloes and eagles .
