Church with Armenian religious architecture, built between 670 and 689 by Prince Kohazat, featuring elaborate decoration
In Sisian itself, on a stony hill overlooking the town, it is absolutely necessary to visit the church of St. John (Sourp Hovannés), an elegant testimony of the first period of Armenian religious architecture. Very similar in design to the church of Hripsimée in Etchmiadzine, of which it is also a contemporary, it has a more elaborate decoration, especially on the dome, which is covered by an elegant arcature. It was built between 670 and 689 by Prince Kohazat, Lord of Siunia, represented on the façade with the other donors.
