CATTLE MARKET
We get up early, like the Omanis: there's no good trading in hot weather. The huge parking lot already sets the tone with its dozens of vans filled with goats, sheep and cows. In Nizwa, it's the animals that are traded every Friday! Sitting in a circle in the center of the square, a host of potential buyers watch the vendors as they lead the livestock by the tether, waiting to be accosted. Everything happens very quickly, and you have to exercise your neophyte's eye to try and understand the ritual of negotiation: an interested buyer asks the price of the animal as the seller passes by, and sometimes waits several turns before making a deal, which is always fairly quick and accompanied by a check on the animal's vitality (condition of teeth, belly, legs). The buzz of commercial conversations, alpagage, haggling, amid the scent of livestock and the colors of the Orient. Every square is a scene of life, almost a painting: old nomads with unblemished eyes, almost blind from the sun, men in traditional costumes with hands on walking sticks, rare Bedouin women with faces protected by a burqa. The deep, traditional Sultanate: the spectacle of real life, a cultural plunge into a part of everyday life amidst the dust raised by the hooves of cattle. Don't forget your camera for superb shots, especially of faces, and take advantage of the hustle and bustle to capture attitudes without being pushy.
