The ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK VISITOR CENTER is a tourist office located in the town of ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK. The Visitor Center is open and features highly informative exhibits, as well as an award-winning 15-minute film entitled "A Year in the Desert". Outside the Visitor Center building, you'll find a desert garden offering a quick overview of the typical vegetation of the 600,000-acre park, with species identified. The desert garden also includes a pupfish pond. Pupfish have evolved from Ice Age conditions to the precarious existence of fish in today's desert. These fish can thrive in freshwater or water almost as salty as the ocean, and can survive temperatures ranging from freezing almost to 108 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water becomes too hot or too cold, or almost dry, these fish hide in the mud at the bottom of the pool.
