The canyon is a Y and consists of two canyons. To the north, the Muerto canyon, 50 km long and, to the south, Chelly canyon, 40 km long. The cliffs are 12 m high at the entrance to the site and over 300 m in Spider Rock (the spider rock). Among the best known places are White House, perched anasazis ruins at 50 m from the ground and Spider Rock needle, both in Chelly canyon.

It is the Navajos themselves who are visiting Chelly's canyon in their all-terrain vehicles. The visit is punctuated by stops to contemplate the many petroglyphs left by the Anasazis on the canyon walls. It leads to the abandoned villages of Anasazis, sometimes comparable to real eagles, nestled in canyons. The contemplation of these ancient villages preserved by time is fabulous. The little horses you will cross, grazing between the canyon trees, belong to the Navajos families. In front of one of the ancient anasazis villages, a young Navajo boy sometimes sells, for a few dollars, the small motifs he painted on stones. In summer, handicrafts are located in a few places. In winter, the canyon bed is submerged by the melted snow stream, which sometimes makes it impracticable (Chinle, the nearby city name means "water flowing" in Navajo). After the tour of the canyon, go back to your car and follow Route 64 (or Route 7 towards the south) that runs over the east slope of the canyon, the views on the counter are worth a look.

In any case, except for White House Trail, you must be accompanied by a Navajo guide to visit Chelly Canyon because it is still inhabited and the lands are private. Excursions can be made on foot, on horseback or in a vehicle. Prices vary depending on duration and route. Consult the list of Navajos operators offering these benefits on the National Park Service website.

Superbe canyon

Magnifique Canyon on a human scale, with shades of colour of red cliffs and green for the end of the canyon. Do not miss to go down the canyon by White House Trail. This 2 hours hike will take you to the foot of the Canyon until ruins of an ancient village.
