Lowell Observatory is one of the biggest attractions in the area.

This is one of the biggest attractions in the area, Flagstaff being a pioneer in light pollution and recognized as the "First International Dark Sky City" in 2001. It was here that Pluto was discovered - in 1930 - and the rings of Uranus - in 1977. Named after Percival Lowell, an astronomer renowned for his work observing the planet Mars, the observatory is still actively involved in research. You can visit during the day to discover the site, and in the evening to observe the stars through the imposing telescope.
