PAINTED DESERT INN
Old inn on a perch overlooking the Painted Desert in a petrified wood building nicknamed Stone Tree House
This old inn was built in 1924 by Herbert Lore, a settler, on a perch overlooking the Painted Desert. The building was nicknamed the Stone Tree House because of the use of petrified wood in its construction. Rooms were available for $2 to $4 per night. Guests ate in the dining room, purchased Native American crafts and enjoyed a cold drink in the refreshment stand. Herbert Lore also provided automobile tours. Today, only the building can be visited.
