Portion of Route 66 through Petrified Forest National Park, bypassed in 1958. A line of telephone poles preserved.
The portion of Route 66 that ran through Petrified Forest National Park was bypassed in 1958. A line of telephone poles that lined the route was retained at the intersection of the old route and the Painted Desert Scenic Byway in the northern part of the park. A few decorative elements have also been placed on the landscaped portion of the roadside, including the carcass of an old 1932 Studebaker. The information panel and photos of the Painted Desert Tower and the former zoo are also worth a look.
