ARIZONA-SONORA DESERT MUSEUM
A zoo, a natural history center and a botanical garden grouped together on some 3.5 km of landscaped paths.
A real gem, it's the second most visited place in Arizona, after the Grand Canyon National Park. It's worth noting that the trail is extremely well thought-out, with booths where volunteers take us on a fun tour of the desert. Fun facts about the flora and fauna of the area, from the animals' sense of sight to their hunting habits and their perception of danger... Something to interest young and old alike! All this while passing through a superb botanical garden, a number of - relatively natural - animal enclosures, several galleries and even an aquarium. From October to April, the raptor free flight is a must: an opportunity to see Harris's hawks - or small Mexican eagles - fly freely from perch to perch, while experts teach us more about their way of life. From November to March, you can go one step further and receive the majestic eagle owl on your gloved hand - by reservation and for an additional US$125.
Special mention must also be made of the Desert Loop, which takes visitors on a journey through breathtaking vistas. Finally, a word of advice: firstly, allow at least 2 hours to explore the whole area, or even more if you're travelling with children. Then, if you're also planning a trip to Saguaro National Park, visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum first: you'll get a different perspective on the desert.
