Founded in 940, this temple is dedicated to Fudō Myō-ō, a deity of the Shingon sect. While Tairano Masakado was leading a revolt against Emperor Suzaku, the latter asked the priest Kanjo to go there with the icon and perform three weeks of ritual (Goma) for peace. On the last day, the revolt ceased. As Kanjo prepared to return to Kyoto with the icon, the oracle of Fudō Myō-ō asked him to leave it behind to help the people in suffering.
