It is whispered that this temple was built in 1127 for the purpose of guarding the statue of Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai), founder of the Shingon sect, found by Kanenori Hirama in the river. Kōbō Daishi appeared to him one night and asked him to fish out the statue and worship it, which would bring him happiness and security. A rather amazing five-story pagoda can be seen here. It is known for its power of Yakuyoke (warding off evil), and is commonly referred to as Yakuyoke No Odaishi-sama.
