Zenkoji Temple was founded in 1558 by the warlord Shingen Takeda, who ruled Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi) from 1540 to 1573. The road leading to the temple passes directly through an impressive wooden gate (sanmon) and climbs to the imposing main hall (kondo). Both buildings were rebuilt in 1796, and feature red and white colours with gold detailing. They are designated as important cultural properties. On a clear day, the steps of the main hall offer a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji.
