The origins of the shrine date back almost 2000 years. It has undergone many transformations and renovations since then. The last one dates back to the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, the last of the three unifiers of Japan, during the Sengoku period (17th century). Every year, for more than three centuries, a festival is held in December, the Chichibu Yomatsuri. Floats decorated with paper lanterns leave from the shrine to cross the city. It attracts thousands of tourists.
