The main attraction of the area remains the active Mihara Yama volcano, which rises to 758 m. The last eruption occurred in November 1986 and residents were, for the most part, evacuated to Tōkyō. Despite the high level of volcanic activity, Ōshima remains a popular destination for Tokyoites for its mild climate, beaches, and outstanding views of the Izu Peninsula. The volcano can be reached by bus from Motomachi Port (to the west). A small winding road leads to the volcano in 25 minutes.
