The Byodoin Temple, a symbol of the glory of the Fujiwara clan to this day, was originally a villa on the west bank of the Uji-gawa River belonging to Minamoto no Toru. It was given to Fujiwara no Michinaga, and it was his son, Yorimichi, who converted it into a temple. The Hououdo (Phoenix Hall), considered a national treasure, is surrounded by the Aji-ike Pond. The Hoshokan Museum, within the temple, exhibits many treasures such as a gilded bronze Phoenix and the Bonshou (a temple bell). The place is very photogenic.
