ISHIYAMADERA TEMPLE
This temple, which was founded in the 8th century, now belongs to the Shingon sect. It is known as the place where the famous Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari) of Shikibu Murasaki, of the Tokugawa family, was written. It is also the 13th place of the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage of the 33 Buddhist temples. The temple houses a large number of National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, including a two-storey pagoda and a variety of religious texts and Buddhist statues. The name 'Ishiyama' ('mountain of stone') refers to the sacred Wollastonite.
