SAGAWA ART MUSEUM
This magnificent art museum opened its doors on March 22, 1998 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the carrier Sagawa Express Co. Ltd. Its modern and innovative architecture, respecting traditions, is situated in a relaxing natural setting, not far from Lake Biwa. The aim of this museum is to promote and develop art and culture through exhibitions of artists embodying the spirit of Japanese art. These talented artists include painter Hirayama Ikuo, sculptor Sato Churyo and ceramist Raku Kichizaemon, among others. The latter three, by the way, supervised the spaces and lights of the different parts that make up the museum. In addition to the room for temporary exhibitions, the works of these artists are in fact arranged in three separate spaces (painting, sculpture and ceramics). A visit to the site is in itself a real pleasure. The tea room, designed by Raku Kichizaemon, is an architectural masterpiece. Thanks to the use of materials found from all over the world and the mix of modern and traditional techniques, this pavilion is bathed in an atmosphere of elegance and refinement. It stands in contrast to the tea pavilions that we are used to seeing in the Archipelago. To reach it, you have to take a passage under the museum pond. To visit it, go to the reception for a guided tour (departure at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm). This experience (30 minutes, ¥1,000) is highly recommended, although in Japanese.
