GYOKUZO-IN
Shukubo, located in Nara, offers simple accommodation and shojin-ryori, the monks' vegetarian cuisine
This establishment, in the heart of the temple, is a shukubo, i.e. a simple lodging for itinerant monks. Nowadays, anyone can come and spend a night in the temple and taste the shojin-ryori, the monks' vegetarian cuisine. The rooms, with no private bathroom, are simple but comfortable. The experience is very exotic and unique for foreign travelers. It is also possible to take part, early in the morning, in the fire ceremony, gomataki, and to listen to the Buddhist sutras sung by the monks.
