SHIKA-NO-TSUNOKIRI

During the breeding season, in autumn, the many male deer in Nara Park can become severely aggressive. In order to preserve the well-being of the group and to prevent them from becoming a threat to the inhabitants, the antlers of the sacred animals are cut down during this annual ceremony, which began in 1671.
