It is the oldest annual Buddhist festival in Japan (since more than 1250 years). These two weeks of festivities, which celebrate the return of spring, take place mainly at Todaiji temple. Every evening after sunset, theOtaimatsu, the ceremony in honor of Buddha, takes place, during which huge torches are blazing on the balcony of the temple. The spectacle is incredible. Don't be afraid if you find yourself below, the sparks that are thrown protect the people who receive them from evil spirits.
