When Nara was the country's capital, this shrine was erected to protect the city and bring prosperity and happiness to all its inhabitants. Nestled in a lush forest (itself an excellent place for a stroll), the vermilion glow of the main building catches the eye, but it's the hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns that fill visitors with wonder. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it's a pretty little marvel, to be visited along with the botanical garden next door.

Magnifique
