The city of Imaicho, very well preserved, offers a dive into the atmosphere of the Edo period. Founded between 1532 and 1555, near Shonenji Temple, Imaicho managed to prosper as a trading city despite turbulent times. Today, there are about 500 traditional houses and shops spread over an area of 2 kilometers, making it easy to visit on foot. It is an important site for the preservation of groups of traditional buildings, some of which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The area is still inhabited.
