SUMIYOSHI TAISHA
It is the most important Sumiyoshi shrine among the thousands erected in memory of the Empress Jingū and the three kamis who protected her during her campaign against Korea in the 3rd century. The stone lanterns were donated by sailors and fishermen to protect them from the dangers of the sea. An astonishing arched bridge, the Sori hashi, is said to have been built at the request of Hideyoshi Toyotomi's wife. At the beginning of each year, many worshippers go there to pray for health and prosperity for the coming year.
