MAIKO MARINE WALK
The Akashi Bridge-Kaikyō is the longest suspension bridge in the world (3,911 m), and is definitely worth a visit. There are 1991 meters between the two main pillars. This distance requires technology that is still unequalled. During the visit, you can stroll for a few moments outside on the bridge structure to feel the thrill of being 47 metres above the sea. A covered information centre awaits the visitor halfway along the way. From there, you can admire the view of the surroundings from the large windows and direct one of the cameras on top of the pillars in real time. If you are in Japan on January1, you can climb up to the bridge to watch the first sunrise of the year from there. Before finishing the visit, in front of the elevators in the entrance hall, don't forget to caress the head of the Buddha there: it is said that he would grant wishes. If you walk around Maiko in the evening, don't forget to observe the bridge. The bridge is illuminated by LEDs with colour combinations that vary according to the time of day and the season: the first half hour of illumination will always be rainbow colours, then will vary (pink for the cherry trees in spring, for example). Everyfirst Sunday of each month, from 7.59 pm to 8 pm, for only 1 minute, the bridge lights will be switched off. The goal is to give time for a lover to propose and for the bridge to light up again for the chosen one's answer (hopefully positive).
