Esashi is a charming fishing village located about 1h30 by car from Hakodate (about 70 km). The main street of the village, Inishie kaido, has been very nicely restored and some buildings are worth a visit. It is indeed registered on the list of the most beautiful villages in Japan. Don't forget to visit the Ubagami Daijin-gu shinto shrine, the oldest in Hokkaido. Every summer, from August 9 to 11, the Ubagami Daijingu Togyo festival is held. At over 370 years old, it is the oldest festival in Hokkaido.
